MARJORIE KAYE
Ethereal Waves
November 14 – December 20, 2026

Lightforms Art Center is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper and wood by Marjorie Kaye, a Massachusetts-based artist whose intricate geometric and organic compositions explore the rhythms, patterns, and energies of the natural world. Inspired by close observation of nature, Kaye creates works in which geometric sequences unfold intuitively, suggesting the underlying structures of growth, movement, and transformation.

“I watch the light move slowly over the trees in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening, and the light comes through them in a rhythm of predictability,” Kaye writes. Observing the movement of wind through branches and the changing patterns of the natural world, she recognizes forms and energies similar to those that have continuously emerged in her paintings.

“I am exploring form in its purity,” she explains. “My work transmits the infinite combinations of geometric and organic components of the natural world, translating these into elemental combinations.” Kaye's compositions bring together the discipline of geometric structure and the freedom of intuitive creation. Through her work, she investigates the harmonies and mythology of higher perception, seeking to crystallize what extends beyond ordinary sensory experience. “It combines the discipline of geometric sequence with the veering off the path of symmetry,” she writes.

Her recent work focuses on what she calls an “organic” or “intuitive” algorithm, breaking down the surface into rhythmic areas determined by the angles and relationships of emerging forms. Working with watercolor brush pens, she makes decisions quickly as the brush moves over the surface in small incremental shapes. Each new element responds to the one before it, creating an interactive dance between positive and negative space.

“The work is a union of opposites: expressive, yet cerebral,” Kaye writes. Despite the intense detail of her compositions, precision is not always the guiding principle. Instead, the development of each work is driven by momentum and the evolving relationships between forms. “The commonality of momentum is what drives each work and results from the exploration of the one before it,” she explains. “They are one continuous piece, accessible fractals.”

The exhibition includes works on paper and wood, revealing Kaye's continuing investigation into the relationships between geometric order, organic growth, and intuitive expression. Her compositions suggest interconnected systems in which individual forms develop into increasingly complex patterns, reflecting the rhythms and structures of the natural world.

Kaye has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, and her work has been reviewed in publications including The Boston Globe and Artscope Magazine. Beyond her artistic practice, she has played an important role in developing opportunities for other artists. She founded Galatea Fine Art, an artist-run gallery in Boston featuring more than thirty artists, and served as its director until 2023. Her other initiatives have included Caladan Gallery and Gallery 181. She currently lives and works in North Adams, MA.

This exhibition is curated by Finnish artist Sampsa Pirtola and presented in collaboration with Rudolf Steiner Library (www.rudolfsteinerlibrary.org). The hours for this exhibition are Thursdays–Sundays, 1–5pm. (Closed on Thanksgiving.) Visit www.lightformsartcenter.com for event details and more info.
