PATRICK STOLFO
Sculptural and Pictorial Talismans
June 19-July 26, 2026
Sculptural and Pictorial Talismans is a solo exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Patrick Stolfo. Bringing together charcoal drawings and sculptural works in terracotta, wood, stone, and concrete, the exhibition explores art's capacity to function as a vessel for meaning, transformation, and spiritual presence.
At the center of Stolfo's practice is the idea of the talisman: an object imbued with forces that extend beyond its physical form. For Stolfo, art becomes talismanic when it is created through conscious intention and embodies multiple dimensions simultaneously—as material substance, image, mood, and essential idea. His works seek to make perceptible otherwise invisible realities through the expressive language of form, structure, light, shadow, and gesture.
In Sculptural and Pictorial Talismans, drawings and sculptures enter into a dialogue between the pictorial and the physical, revealing a shared concern with metamorphosis and inner life. Whether rendered through the immediacy of charcoal or carved and modeled through enduring materials, Stolfo's forms invite contemplation of the relationship between the visible world and the unseen forces that shape human experience.
As Patrick Stolfo writes, “The ancients knew that ritually invoked art had power. Contemporary works of art can still be contemporary talismans from which spiritual and magical powers emanate.” Through sustained attention to the metamorphic qualities of light, darkness, color, and form, his work seeks to create openings through which deeper dimensions of experience may become visible.
The exhibition reflects Stolfo's conviction that art can serve as a moral and spiritual force within contemporary life. Rather than functioning solely as decoration or commodity, these works propose art as a means of cultivating awareness, connection, and transformation. For Stolfo, talismanic artworks can continue to “radiate forces for personal and social transformation, peace, and love into the world.”
Patrick Stolfo completed both a BFA and MA in his hometown of Detroit before undertaking a four-year sculptural arts training and teaching internship at Emerson College in England. Since 1987 he has lived and worked in Columbia County, NY, where he has taught art, aesthetics, and Waldorf pedagogy at Hawthorne Valley School and numerous educational institutions throughout North America. His sculptures and drawings have been exhibited and commissioned in New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, California, England, and Sweden. Patrick’s website is patrickstolfo.smugmug.com
